BY the incredible lack of posts in this section, am i to believe that no one in our area goes climbing outside? i will say from personal experience, that is not the case. i will initiate this discussion by writing briefly about one of my favorite crags, New River Gorge, and this past weekend.
Saturday, myself and two others dodged a few raindrops to make it down to Bubba, a crag that has seen a bit of development in recent years. we climbed at the Beer wall, then headed slightly downstream to two climbs that would close the day. My Sister Makes Cluster Bombs, an action-packed little route, right next to Daisycutter, which did not turn out as well as i had hoped. in fact it could have been mistaken for a comedy, not a rock climb, with the onset of night, the bats, the wet rock, and the sheer stupidity of it all.
Sunday brought beautiful weather, and my first visit of the season to Kaymoor. we started out with a stout warm-up, then headed down to rico buttress, where one of my partners had business with a certain climb. he however ran into one or two pockets of resistance on his way to the anchors.
After that we had to get on the road, the weekend had come to a close with a good time had by all or most, or many.

A few things I'd have to add to the overall greatness of the trip referred to above:
-perfectly timed use of the phrases "Dick Beaters" and "Guac in the Park"
-subzero arctic handwashing
-browsing Roger's Pulitzer-worthy literature
-involuntarily using Toyota car hood to test skull hardness
-a first introduction to the Mickey and all its subsequent glory
-new climber understanding what it's all about, thanks to her partners |

Well, it seems that my return to the NRG is somewhat questionable. However this weekend looks like the best opportunity in the coming months. I think that I will go regardless of weather condtions, just sitting around a campfire drinking beer is preferable to another weekend in Va Beach. I hope that a party can be rallied and their sights set upon Rogers Rocky Top Retreat for this coming Sat. and Sunday. Oh, and by any chance we get any subzero arctic handwashing done all the better. We must agree that under no circumstance that anyone partakes in the "Guac in the Park", as it is a dangerous and highly charged item of infamous notoriety.

So, Busdriver, who put up the topropes for you on all those climbs? I know you didn't lead all those routes in one weekend. That sounds like a years worth of leading for you. Well, I guess they are sport routes. Kind of like a toprope that you put up while you're climbing. |

i have another installment of "the weekends adventures", although it is somewhat belated. two weeks ago some friends and i went back to the new for what we thought was going to be a horrible weekend weather-wise, however the gods shined down on us for the first two of three days. the rock was wet in places from recent rainfall.
the first day was spent running away from a hord of loud, obnoxious euro-trash whose mission it must have been to take over bubba city and follow us around while doing so. we got on lots of the newer climbs in bubba, and were not particularly impressed with the quality.
the second we went down to butcher's. the climbing as always was quite good. that night it rained a bit so we went in search of dry rock on sunday, and found a good climb for everyone down on beauty. the drive home followed shortly thereafter.
have fun and be safe. |
